Zitto & Bevi meaning quite literally ‘shut up and drink’ isn’t the motto you should start out with on a date but you never know, it could work in extreme circumstances! This cosy little place is on Nine Tree Hill in Stokes Croft and their menu is very small and authentically rustic. Go for one of the lasagnes, let your date choose the wine and don’t worry about the bill.

Perhaps not for a first or blind date, unless you particularly like to challenge future lovers to prove their noodle slurping, chopstick wielding abilities early on. Kao and Bao, owned by the same people as Hanoi Coffee Company and Sticks n Broth and with a completely casual, street food feel. The menu is small – think steamed buns, tuna poke and big bowls of ramen served as it comes. Take your date here ‘almost by accident’ and you’ll definitely score hipster points.

I said Nomu not Nobu! But if you’re lucky your date might not realise! This Japanese bar and restaurant at the bottom of Whiteladies Road does two killer early bird deals (available every day from midday to 7pm) including 3 for £13 on sushi, perfect for sharing and two courses for £10. Order sake to accompany your meal and be sure to follow tradition by pouring your date their sake before drinking your own.

A hidden gem in Stokes Croft which looks like someone’s garden on one side and a dive bar on the other. Don’t be fooled. These guys know their pizza. Their two for £12 deal is available all week long (Mon to Thurs 4pm – 7:30pm, Sat 2pm – 4pm, Sun 2pm – 10pm) so why not go for food here and then, with the money you’ve saved, head across the road to oh-so-cool cube cinema just along the way?

Suggest an early post work dinner in fancy Westbury Park and impress your date with this candle lit art deco styled Italian bistro. Their Monday and Tuesday night deal is great value at £15 for two courses and their current menu includes all sorts of delicious stuff including scallops and truffle oil. Posh. Oh – and it’s happy hour all night too.

Nothing says romance more than a sharing platter right? Unless your name’s Joey. With three outlets around town (and a fourth opening soon at Wapping Wharf, Biblos serves mediterranean food in an informal environment. My favourite has to be Biblos on the Hill at the top of Gloucester Road. If the weather is ok, sit outside and enjoy people watching as your hands meet over that last piece of falafel.

If you’re over in Southville, try Zazu’s Kitchen on trendy North Street and save money on food before heading across the river for drinks around Wapping Wharf. Their midweek fixed price menu runs from 5:30pm right up to 10pm, Monday to Thursday and offers great value at two courses for £15. It even has steak on there so you won’t feel like you’re scrimping.
