10 Awesome Bristol Photos

I was born in Bristol and grew up just outside in Portishead, which means my photos have a bit of Bristol and a bit of Portishead. But hey, we think we are part of Bristol, so here’s ten of my favourite photos of the wider Bristol area.

1. Suspension Bridge Star trails 

I’ll start with what is really my favourite photo I’ve ever taken. I’d been wanting to try star trails in an urban environment for a while, so when the skies cleared and the moon set, I headed out to Clifton to give it a go. I was so surprised and so happy with how it turned out!

2. Stormy Battery Point 

This photo is probably the very first image I took which I made me want to take photography seriously. One summer evening it was super stormy in the Severn, so I headed over to Battery Point to catch the sunset. The combination of a clearing storm and massive waves resulted in awesome light and really challenging conditions for taking photos.

3. Portishead Lido Sunset 

One of my favourite things about Portishead is the coast. So when Portishead Lido said I could come and shoot a sunset timelapse overlooking the pool, I was hoping for one of Portishead’s stunning sunsets. Needless to say the conditions didn’t disappoint.

4. Suspension Bridge Glow 

Over Christmas I met up with fellow Bristol photographer Jim Cossey to catch the sunrise from the Avon Gorge. With a forecast of clear skies all morning, I was a little worried when it started raining… Luckily, just before the sun rose over the cliffs, the clouds disappeared and the sun burst out. I love the ethereal, dreamy look of the result!

5. Fore Hill Sunrise 

Looking over Portishead towards Bristol and Avonmouth at sunrise on the last day of 2015. I love how this has a bit of everything, old Portishead, new Portishead, Avonmouth Docks, the ships we see so often and Bristol in the background.

6. 98 Marina 

There’s a public art trail around Portishead, which features this really cool statue right at the end of the Marina. I’ve photographed it in nearly all conditions now, but this angle with the flats behind it really captures my imagination.

7. Black Nore Night 

In the past couple of years I’ve got really into star trail photography. This was one of the first star trail images I took and features the beautiful Black Nore Lighthouse on the Portishead coast.

8. Ship to Shore to Stars

A final star trails shot, this time my first attempt at capturing star trails in an urban environment, from the end of Portishead Marina. I went out not really sure what I would get and was pretty stunned with the result. The idea works

9. Battery Bridges 

I was really surprised when I discovered this view, I love how a load of the coastal landmarks all line up with one another.

10. Suspension Bridge Sunrise 

Where better to end my top 10 than with the Suspension Bridge at sunrise. It’s always a wonderful sight.
