There Is A Petition To Save Beautiful Turbo Island From Renovation

Will the beauty of Turbo Island remain?

Some people say that you haven’t truly experienced Bristol until you’ve taken part in a Turbo Island rave in the early hours of the weekend.

Others might say that Turbo Island is a bit of a problem area on Stokes Croft, with street drinkers and fire a regular feature during the day, evening and night… well most of the time.

The Instagram account @turbo_island_in_bloom captures the essence of Turbo Island better than anyone.

You might not know that before it was destroyed during the 1940 Bristol Blitz, Turbo Island actually used to be a shoe shop.

We can’t comment on how good the Turbo Island shoe shop may have been, but it’s an accepted reality that Turbo Island has gone from strength to strength in the ensuing decades. Slowly becoming a bastion of culture and a go-to for visitors of Bristol.

Just look at its 10 year challenge…

It’s subsequently come as a shock to many that there appears to be a renovation currently happening.

This has caused ‘outraged’ Bristol residents (83 so far) to sign a petition to ‘Save Beautiful Bristol Landmark “Turbo Island” from Renovation‘.

Duncan W has beautifully articulated Bristol’s feelings through his petition:

‘Turbo Island is the jewel in Bristol’s architectural and infrastructural crown. What other place could survive so many impromptu bonfires and variations of street art, from grimey bath tubs to questionable conspiracy theory graffiti?’

Recently “the man” has cordoned off the area and appears to be renovating it.

This is totally not vibing with the free spirit of Bristol’s community. We need to tell them to back off our sacred lands and leave it be. It’s a place where the community must not be disturbed, as the barren holy triangle holds together the Stokes Croft community like glue. Students, hipsters, hippies and homeless converge here in an accurate reflection of society.

Paving this historic landmark is a bulldozing form of gentrification, leading to cultural homogeneity where we all have to wear grey and the only accepted music is Coldplay. To sully this for the sake of banker wankers from Bath with double barreled surnames would be a disservice to Bristol as a whole.

Let your voice known that we need to Make Bristol Shit Again.

If you feel the same way, there’s only one thing to do. Sign the petition: https://www.change.org/p/bristol-residents-save-turbo-island

It could only be a matter of time before the Turbo Island rave is sadly a thing of the past:
