1. No Man’s Grace

Situated in the heart of Redland on Chandos Road this has to be one of our all time favourite places to eat in Bristol. Co-founder and head chef is John Watson who is former chef at Casamia (Michelin starred restaurant in Westbury-On-Trym). Think of the best contemporary tapas in Bristol you’ve ever had and times that by ten and you’re still not even close to how good the food is! The restaurant’s philosophy is to make the first couple of mouthfuls the most flavoursome and they always seem to achieve this without fail. Individual tapas ranges from £5 to £9 but we would happily pay the maximum for any dish we had, as you simply won’t want the mouthgasm to end. Be sure you leave room for one of the five desserts. The homemade toffee ice-cream is a must.

2. The Ox

I’ve never found Corn Street has had much to offer apart from Wetherspoon’s, Walkabout and chavs until we discovered The Ox. A fantastic steak and cocktail bar very subtly situated down some steps to the left of the entrance of The Commercial Rooms. You’ll be greeted by prohibition style decor (think dim lighting, chandeliers and murals). The name gives away the variety of food served, with meat supplied from the superb Buxton Butchers. It’s definitely one of the best steaks we’ve had and superb value for money. Early bird evening meal (5pm-7pm) 6oz rump steak with sauce, fries and glass of wine for £12.50. Be sure to book as this place is popular.

3. The Urban Standard

Just a little walk beyond the hustle and bustle of Stokes Croft and past the arches on Gloucester Road you’ll find The Urban Standard. With Thomas Edison style light bulbs (yes the cliché hipster ones) and arty industrial decor, this restaurant bar stands out from the best of the rest. Their lunch and dinner menu serve the best mussels we’ve had in Bristol, with constantly changing marinières and menu on their specials board. Their Sunday roast is also one of the best in Bristol with very generous portions and all locally sourced food. Very good selection of craft ales and attentive staff. Get on it.

4. Souk Kitchen (Clifton and Southville)

Fantastic middle eastern/north African cuisine served in mezze style with optional larger mains if desired. Despite the foreign style of cooking/recipes the food is sourced mostly locally from the local bakers to the butchers. Head to Southville for a busier, louder venue or to Clifton for a more relaxed time. We’d recommend the souk pilaf, chargrilled chicken and tzatziki. It’s visually presented like a contemporary abstract work of art and tastes really fresh with a great spicy palate of flavours.

5. The Town House

Unique brunch or dinner bar/restaurant easily found on Whiteladies Road opposite The Cowshed. We can’t stress how good this place is, if not for the good food but for value for money. Their £10 three course set menu runs from 12-7pm, Mon-Fri and 12-6pm on a Saturday. The price of the 3 for £10 deal doesn’t by any means reflect quality and rest assured the portion size is always generous. We’d strongly recommend the hangar steak (always perfectly cooked) for the mains and sticky toffee for dessert. At times this place won’t have the quickest service but expect superb food, your wallet not to feel short changed and a buzzing atmosphere.
