10 Awesome Places For Street Food In Bristol

If you love street food, Bristol is definitely the place for you

With so much going on and street food markets happening all over the blimmin’ shop, the choice is endless. I love the wild variation in cooking techniques and cuisines; we have traders covering every corner of the world, cooking on gas rings, charcoal, in pizza ovens, under gazebos and from vintage trucks.

For me, street food is social food – casual eating with friends, often outdoors, always quick and usually enroute to a final destination (the pub). There are a couple of pop-up kitchens below because whilst they aren’t strictly on the ‘street’ they have that same nomadic quality and fit perfectly within this list which I’ve carefully crafted, despite the heavy toll on my pot belly.

So… in no particular order:

1. The Little Taqueria

Mexican and Central American street food done right. These guys spent a year in Central America honing their skills and luckily for us, we can now gobble up some seriously good tacos from their little orange truck. Jump straight in with the ‘Al Pastor’ pork tacos complete with authentic Belizean refried beans, pico de gallo, guacamole and chargrilled pineapple. Amazing (and messy).

2. Momo Bar

The Momo bar might have been around for a while but the queues prove that Mr Momo’s food is as popular as ever. These gorgeous steamed Tibetan dumplings are available with a range of fillings and come with the best home made chilli sauce and lightly pickled salads.

3. Wood Chop Pizza

We first encountered Wood Chop Pizza at The Harbourside Market. Deliciously crispy sourdough pizza bases topped with simple ingredients and cooked fresh in a portable wood fired oven whilst you wait. You’ll wait a while but it’s well worth it.

4. Uchu Peru

Who’d have thought that ceviche was a thing you ate on the streets of Bristol?  Gone are the days of street food dominated by pulled pork and burgers. Uchu Peru are doing something new and fresh and I LOVE IT.

5. Gopal’s Curry Shack

A well known name on the street food scene here in Bristol, Gopal’s serve delicious vegetarian and vegan indian food. Their curries are so packed full of flavour that if you’re a meat eater you won’t bat an eyelid. If they have them, stock up on the sweet potato and spinach pakoras. SO. SO. GOOD.

6. Eatchu

With a constant flow of handmade Japanese gyoza sizzling away, the smell from this stall is enough to ensure there’s always a queue! Eatchu offer a choice of fillings, sauces and toppings so you can customise your choice. My fave has to be the ton gyoza with spicy rayu and shibori. Want to know what that is? 7. Bearittos

Burritos and tacos on a bright green, double decker bus, in the bearpit. It’ll never cease to make me smile when I walk past it. Stop in for lunch and sit upstairs in the cute, brightly decorated space. Go for the chicken burrito with hot sauce and it’ll fill you up ‘til dinnertime and beyond.

8. The Feastie Boys

Confession time – I’ve not yet experienced this food but it’s at the top of my hit list and through the almighty power of instagram, I feel like I know their menu intimately.  If only scratch and sniff iPhones were a thing. They’re currently in a kitchen takeover at The Hillgrove until 10th September so get in there quick.

9. Caphe Saigon

The brainchild of local street foodies Viet Vite and Uncle Hos. Tasty vietnamese street food currently at home in a garage space in the Vintage Market right opposite Pieminister on Stokes Croft. When the sun is shining, there’s nothing better than a traditional drip coffee and a bahn-mi or spring roll to fill you up!

10. The Pickled Brisket

Just the best salt beef around. Don’t look at the Pickled Brisket on instagram before lunch if you can’t physically get to them. I’ve made that mistake before and it left me very grumpy.
